Many managers I’ve worked with have experienced a version of this soulless feelingless transactional interaction.
The: “what have you done for me lately?”
“Hey, fantastic month, great result. Now, what have you got for next month?”
Or,
“That was a great piece of work well done, here’s a bonus and thanks, but…… what have you done for me lately?”
I know of one business who hit record sales. They had their busiest month ever in June, then backed it up in July. Record sales that automatically become the new normal, the new benchmark. It is never enough.
Relentless, remorseless, heartless.
Like walking up a down escalator that keeps accelerating.
Look we get it; you just don’t know what you can achieve unless you are challenged. Your paradigm expands with your belief.
However, people need to breathe. Relentlessness leads to crashes – or as I’ve seen in other organisations the “management” of sales results. Pushing sales into next month, because they don’t want to raise the benchmark by doing too well this month.
How do you balance riding the wave of growth, urgency, and achievement with the sense of thanklessness and the feeling that “my job just keeps wanting more from me?”
