Get It Done

We’ve all got important projects that drift. The exercise program that starts “next week.” The business strategy that needs “just a bit more thinking.” The difficult conversation we’ll have “when the time is right.”

Your brain isn’t sabotaging you—it’s doing exactly what it evolved to do.

From a threat-detection perspective, avoiding immediate problems (client work due today, kids needing school drop-off) ranks higher in your neural priority queue than building for longer-term outcomes. Clear and present danger beats vague future benefit every single time.

But there’s a second factor at play: ambiguity is expensive.

Your brain processes “drop kids at school” efficiently—one clear action, known location, predictable outcome. Compare that to “start exercise program”—which gym? what routine? will it work? can I sustain it? why bother if I’ll quit anyway?

The sheer number of unresolved variables creates cognitive load. Your brain, faced with this murky decision landscape, does what any well-designed threat-detection system would do: it defers to the clearer, more urgent task list.

We need to apply a corrective lens.

Three questions to cut through the fog:

1. What does good-enough look like? Not perfect. Not optimal. What’s the bare minimum outcome you’d be genuinely satisfied with? Define it specifically enough that you’d know if you got there.

2. What does 30 days from now look like? One milestone. One visible indicator that you’re on track. Line of sight matters.

3. What’s the actual next action? Not the project. Not the outcome. The single smallest physical action that moves this forward. “Open laptop” counts. “Send calendar invite” counts. Make it as executable and simple as possible.

You can spend hours refining this. Or you can spend 10 minutes getting clear enough to start.

The question isn’t whether this approach is perfect. The question is: what project have you been carrying around that needs to move?
